We recently had the incredible opportunity to host a Baby Box drop-in event in the Houses of Parliament, kindly hosted by Lis Twist MP.  In partnership with The Children’s Foundation, we brought our pilot project directly to the heart of government to show MPs and Peers how this simple concept can transform lives.
For those unfamiliar, the Baby Box is a national scheme already in place in Scotland, inspired by a hugely successful Finnish model.
It’s a starter kit for every newborn, delivered to new parents and filled with essential items like clothes, bedding, and a safe sleeping mattress. The Baby Box itself is a safe space for the baby to sleep, but it’s so much more than that.
Our message to many of the MP’s we met was clear: this is a powerful, preventative public health intervention.  It is about giving every baby, regardless of their background, the best possible start in life.  Here is what we showcased:
Improving Health Outcomes: We shared data and stories from our pilots that show how the Baby Box can reduce infant mortality and improve maternal health. The Baby Box acts as a crucial point of contactfor healthvisitors and midwives, ensuring that every new family is supported where necessary.
The Baby Box itself encourages parents to follow safe sleeping guidelines and provides a clean, clear, and flat sleeping space.
The MPs we met, are all too familiar with the struggles of families in their constituencies, so they understood immediately the relief a Baby Box provides.
Our pilots have shown that the Baby Box can foster a sense of support and connection. The Baby Boxes are often distributed through community hubs or health services, creating a moment of connection for new parents who might otherwise feel isolated.
We were delighted to see so many MPs and Peers engage with our event. They were genuinely interested in our Baby Boxes, asking questions about the logistics, the costs, and, most importantly, the impact on families.
Our hope is that the drop-in event marks a significant step towards a national conversation about a universal Baby Box scheme for the entire UK. By sharing the evidence from our pilots and highlighting the profound social and economic benefits, we are confident that we can build the political momentum needed to make this a reality.
A massive thank you again to Liz Twist MP and to The Children’s Foundation for their tireless work and partnership. We would also like to thank every Member of Parliament who took the time to listen and learn.
We believe all babies deserve the best start in life!
